Morhpo’s biometrics research department of 80 top engineers and doctoral students is organized in four operating teams, each with a specific mission:

  • Algorithm development for the three biometric technologies (fingerprint, iris, face).
  • Cryptology.
  • Construction of pilot systems and demonstrators, an essential part of biometric research, since the human nature of the source data entails significant contingencies .
  • Advanced technologies.

FINGERPRINTS WITHOUT ANY PHYSICAL CONTACT

The award ceremony for Safran’s Innovation Competition was held on April 27 at the Safran Museum in Villaroche, near Paris. It was attended by over 400 guests from about 15 Group companies. A team from Morpho took the Innovation Grand Prize for their “Finger on the Fly” technology. _ For the first time, a system is capable of recognizing fingerprints without any physical contact. This major innovation will help reduce the risk of transmitting germs, and will also make it easier to use this type of fingerprint recognition system in countries where the culture does not encourage direct contact.
Furthermore, the Morpho system has proven to be more effective than its competitors. “Despite the absence of contact, the system recognizes difficult patterns more easily,” notes Bruno Bernard, Vice President, Group Improvement Initiative.

"Turbine”, a European project

Morpho is the coordinator of the European project Turbine (Trusted Revocable Biometric Identities), part o f the 7th R&D Framework Program. Turbine aims to propose advanced digital identity management solutions, combining automated recognition of fingerprints with innovative cryptographic techniques, primarily focusing on burying secret information within a fingerprint description. Once protected like this, the information can only be accessed by its owner, which means that this work could generate significant advances in the protection of personal data.
